Keep Learning

As humans, we are constantly taking in information. We sense a whole lot of things. We observe a whole lot of things. But what do we actually learn? Sometimes it takes experiencing something more than once to figure out that you do or don’t like that thing. Oftentimes, those experiences can be unconscious and we are just witnessing things happening that we might not have as much control over.

But something we do have control over, is the conscious learning. Picking up a book. Reading a chapter. And absorbing it. Sometimes it means going back and rereading a chapter or passage, but books are filled to the covers with knowledge.

I am currently reading a book by Tsoknyi Rinpoche called Open Heart, Open Mind. While I read things/passages/research/books sporadically, I am making a conscious effort to do some ‘learning homework’ everyday. I want to be able to close my eyes at night and remember something I learned that actually has an impact on my life. And it always does, because even if I cannot resonate in the moment to something I’ve read, I have absorbed it and it is in my material to reference. So that maybe when I do stumble upon an experience that I have trouble making sense of, that random passage or simile or reflection of a buddhist meditation master, is there for me to reference.

I am not perfect, not saying I will remember everything I read, but I want to make an effort to use what I read in my day to day life. Both regarding my own mindset and way I carry myself but also how I engage and show up with other people. A lot is to be learned from other humans, from ancient teachings to your childhood best friend. Choose wisely those who you engage with. And share your love of life with those you cherish.
